1/4 cup powdered sugar.
For vanilla custard, add a pinch of salt.

Four huge egg yolks.
2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.

For the toppings:

Powdered sugar for dusting.

Instructions for Classic Vanilla Custard Bars :

Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175° C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking pan and line with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
  2. In a food processor, mix together the flour, cold butter cubes, powdered sugar, and a touch of salt.
  3. Pulse the ingredients until they resemble coarse crumbs.

Press the crust mixture evenly into the prepared pan.

  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until the edges are gently browned.
  5. Let the crust cool while you prepare the custard.

Make the Vanilla Custard:

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk, sugar, and flour over medium heat.
  2. Stir continually for 5-7 minutes, or until the mixture thickens.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the egg yolks.
  4. To temper the eggs, gradually whisk in approximately 1/2 cup of the hot milk mixture.
  5. Then, slowly pour the egg mixture back into the pot with the remaining hot milk mixture, stirring constantly.
  6. Continue to boil the custard over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it has a pudding-like consistency.
  7. Remove from heat and add the vanilla extract.
  8. Spread the vanilla custard evenly over the cooled crust in the baking pan.
  9. Bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the custard has set and the top is lightly brown.
  10. Allow the bars to cool in the pan for about 30 minutes before refrigerating for at least 2 hours, or until thoroughly cooled.

    Finish and serve.

  11. Once cold, pull the overhanging parchment paper to release the bars from the pan. Put them on a chopping board.
  12. Sprinkle powdered sugar over the top before cutting into bars.
  13. To ensure clean edges, wipe the knife with a moist towel in between cuts.

Serve the silky vanilla custard bars cold. Savor the creamy richness!
