Quick n Easy Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

Scalloped potatoes are a simple classic recipe that is ideal for Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, or simply a Sunday meal.

In this side dish, thinly sliced potatoes and onions are cooked in a simple homemade cream sauce until soft, golden, and bubbling. Potato perfection.

Ingredients  for quick n easy scalloped potatoes recipe 

▢¼ cup butter

▢1 large onion diced

▢2 cloves garlic minced

▢¼ cup flour

▢2 cups milk

▢1 cup chicken broth

▢½ teaspoon salt

▢¼ teaspoon pepper

▢3 pounds white potatoes sliced about ⅛” thick

▢salt and pepper to taste

Instructions for quick n easy scalloped potatoes recipe 

Preheat the oven to 350˚ F.

To create the sauce, combine the butter, onion, and garlic over medium-low heat. Cook for approximately 3 minutes, or until the onion has softened. Cook for about 1-2 minutes after adding the flour.

Reduce the heat to low. Combine the milk and broth. Add a small bit at a time, whisking until thick. The mixture will thicken; add a small amount of liquid at a time, whisking until smooth.

Once all of the liquid has been added, bring to a boil over medium heat while whisking continuously. Allow 1 minute to boil after adding salt and pepper.

Grease a 9″x13″ baking dish. Season ⅓ of the potatoes in the bottom with salt and pepper. Pour ⅓ of the cream sauce on top.


Repeat layers, ending with cream sauce.Cover and bake for 45 minutes.

Uncover and bake for a further 35-45 minutes, or until the potatoes are golden brown and soft. Broil for 3-4 minutes to achieve a golden finish.

Allow to rest 15 minutes before serving.

To Prepare Scalloped Potatoes Ahead of Time

To make these ahead of time (and keep them cooking quickly on the day of serving), we tried partially baked them with wonderful success.

Bake for 50-60 minutes with the dish covered.

Allow to cool entirely on the counter after removing from the oven (cover to retain steam).

Cover and refrigerate.

Remove from the refrigerator at least 30 minutes before baking. Bake uncovered for approximately 35 minutes, or until thoroughly heated.
